ASBESTOS

In case of doubt, it is recommended to bring in an expert to take a sample.  Many building materials may contain asbestos, especially in homes from years before 1982.  Examples of materials: gypsum, brick mortar, plaster/cement, joint compound, textured finish (stucco), insulation, duct insulation, resilient flooring, acoustic tiles (suspended ceiling), etc.

Indeed, Quebec regulations stipulate that any material with an asbestos concentration of at least 0.1% is considered as a material containing asbestos and can be dangerous to health.

VERMICULITE

Vermiculite insulation is usually found in the attic, as it may contain asbestos fibers that are harmful to health.

In case of doubt, it is recommended to bring in an expert to take three separate samples.  Three samples mixed in the same bag have less scientific value, because there is dilution of the asbestos in such a composite sample.  There is therefore a risk of having a false negative result.
